Free Finding Day 11

Just a quick one tonight. I was feeling a bit stressed and blue but was all lifted when i spotted the RCRDLBL newsletter in my inbox!

The newest tracks available for free download? ELLIOT SMITH TRACKS OF COURSE!

Nothing to like Elliot Smith to help you commiserate. Since i was so excited and in love with the 2 tracks i had to post about them.

First is Twilight (Not to be confused with the strangely famed movie ). Beautiful falsetto, bittersweet lyrics and haunting understanding background vocals. To top it all one of the most incredible simple poetic line for a song...."But you're already somebody's baby"

Second and last is coincidentally called Last Call. Now like every Elliot Smith song it reminds me of Good Will Hunting. Of course thats not a big surprise considering he did most of the soundtrack for the movie. Although still in the style which is associated with Elliot Smith and apparent in songs like Between the Bars this song holds something special.

I could try to be really insightful and claim it's because of the contrast between the vocals and the instruments or the crescendo halfway through or even because of the minor chord choices but honestly i have no idea. This song has a very distinct but hard to identify it quality that makes it stick out.

So more free legal tracks availible and of course more on the way!

  1. Nice finds.
I like the way Twilight feels. Looked it up on Youtube and the background pic was him looking out a window through traditional pull-string blinds. The song kinda fit the pic cause I just imagine listening to this to myself with headphones, in the, car staring out the window while there's a calm but not exactly light rain.

I found Last Call to be one of the songs to listen to whenever you want as well as an occasion or mood song. I felt it'd be a song for when you're frustrated or pissed off at something; for those times you want to rip your room apart but obviously need an alternative. The rythem and sound even reinforce that feeling for me; one that I'd imagine putting more movement into playing this song. Like playing sitting down and the pick arm has more back and forth movement in the shoulder.

    There's my two cents. =P

  2. I love your interpretation of Last Call. I think your reaction is very classic when listening to Elliot Smith (THink of Matt Damon in the dorm room scene in Good Will Hunting).

Even more interesting and saddening than is music is Elliot Smith's life and unfortunate death. So far i haven't found a written biography on him but as usual there is a ton of great information about him on the internet and many many fan sites.
